About Us

We're Giacomo and Serena, an Italian couple that moved to Akureyri in 2014. Giacomo is the owner and creator of Rækta Microfarm! He has always been passionate about plants; growing up in Italy he was surrounded by them. When he would visit his grandparents close to Naples he would always admire the huge fig trees in their garden, and the smell reminded him of home. Lemon trees and tomato plants were everywhere, and on harvest days everyone would help prepare their famous tomato sauce.

After working various jobs in Akureyri, Giacomo decided to give a chance to a passion of his. He found an advertisement for managing an indoor farm in town and went for it. He loved it—even the winters felt easier as he entered an Italian atmosphere of greens, warmth, and light at work. When that farm closed, he decided to start his own business, having already built a wonderful connection with local chefs. He takes care of the entire production process, from selecting seeds to delivering to restaurants.

Serena has a permaculture degree and studied sustainability in East Iceland. She owned Orðakaffi, a small café in Akureyri from 2016-2022. Together with Giacomo, she handles the sustainability aspect of the business. She also takes care of bureaucracy, organizes educational visits for schools, and manages social media.

Our Goal

We're here to serve the restaurant industry with real care, building strong, lasting relationships with some of the best chefs in the country. It's not just about delivering top-quality microgreens; it's about listening, collaborating, and supporting each chef's unique vision.

Looking ahead, we're excited about sharing what we do with kids. We've already welcomed kindergarten classes to visit our farm and run workshops, and we'd love to grow this into full programs in schools. Helping kids get their hands in the dirt, learn about growing their own food, and build healthy habits is something we truly believe in.

The ultimate dream is to team up with hospitals and health departments to bring the benefits of microgreens to patients. We believe there's huge potential to support recovery and prevention through better nutrition.
